1 Introduction:

The following article analyses the performance of the Dublin Senior Football team in their quarter final clash with Cork. The game was played on August 3rd 2013. We will be looking at the Dublin performance from a number of different perspectives ahead of their Semi-Final meeting with Kerry on September 1st.
In sections 9 and 10 we will also analyse some of the Opportunities and Threats that will be relevant for the semi-final against Kerry.

•    In the first half Dublin varied the kickouts. 

•    Only one Dublin kickout landed inside Dublin’s own 45 in the first half.

•    8 of Dublin’s 10 2nd half kickouts were kicked out to the right wing in the 2nd half.

•    Dublin went short with 3 of the 10 kickouts, primarily at the end of the 2nd half when they were struggling to gain possession around the middle of the field.

Dublin won 8 of Cork’s 14 kickouts in the first half. Dublin won 6 of Cork’s 14 kickouts in the second half. Cork used short kickouts to combat Dublin’s dominance in the 2nd half.

  • Dublin had 25 turnovers in total.

  • Dublin had one turnover in the scoring zone in the first half.

  • Dublin had 4 turnovers in the scoring zone in the second half.

•    Dublin created 39 scoring opportunities. This is 12 more than the 2012 Championship average.

 

•    10 of Dublin’s 17 scores came from play, 4 in the first half and 6 in the 2nd half. Stephen Cluxton scored 6 from 8 placed balls. 

 

•    Dublin shot 14 wides and dropped 5 scoring efforts short.

•    3 of Dublin’s starting forwards scored from play.

 

•    Dublin created 5 goal scoring opportunities and scored 1. Wing back Jack McCaffrey made 2 of the goal chances while running from deep.

 

•    Dublin’s distribution of scores was good across the 70 minutes. The longest period without a score was 9 minutes – between the 9th and 18th minute.

 

•    Dublin’s overall discipline was good. Interestingly, 5 of Dublin’s 15 fouls were conceded by their midfield duo of McCauley and O’Sullivan. Wing forward Diarmuid Connolly conceded 2 scorable frees.

 

•    After Dublin scored the only goal of the game at the start of the 2nd half, they followed with a pointed free a minute later.

 

•    Dublin’s 2nd half substitutes contributed 4 points from play. Dean Rock in particular had a significant impact when introduced. He scored 2 points, won a kickout and made one turnover.

 

•    8 of Dublin’s 25 turnovers (32%) occurred in the last 10 minutes. During this spell Dublin slowed the game down considerably making a number of substitutions and also delaying the game with injuries.
